WANTED is a solo-play with music, about how a little girl from West Texas overcomes abandonment, celebrity obsession and the juvenile justice system to become a woman with her own song to sing.
Told with humor, edge and heart, Tina Vernon’s WANTED tells the story of Tina Cato, a repressed singer, as she revisits her past looking for the key to unlock the yearning that has kept her silent and searching. We join Tina and her free-spirited younger self on the journey that will take them from childhood abandonment and incarceration to a place of transcendent, self-acceptance. WANTED is a deeply honest investigation of what it is to be silenced by the circumstances of one’s life and the absolute necessity of reclaiming one’s voice.
Drawing on her personal experiences with the west Texas juvenile justice system Vernon has fashioned poetic narrative and multimedia into a tale of belonging, desire, celebrity and criminality. The work is enriched by the inclusion of a musical score composed by Vernon and guitarist, David Ballis. The rest of WANTED’s extraordinary team of collaborating artists and advisers also includes director, Valerie Curtis-Newton, videographer, Katherine Freer and creative consultant, Kamilah Forbes.
